Dear
Friends and Supporters of the Powow Triathlon,
It
is with great regret that I am writing to inform you that
there will not be a 2010 Powow Triathlon.
While
it had been my intention to continue the Powow into 2010
and beyond, building on the race's past success, two
companies that previously contracted with Lighthouse
Events to provide support services for the Powow, have
gone ahead and obtained a permit from the Town of
Amesbury to run a sprint triathlon on the second Saturday
in July of 2010, using Lake Gardiner for the swim and
transition areas.
Clearly, only one triathlon can
be run in the Town of Amesbury on that day, and since a
triathlon is a major undertaking for any municipality, it
is not possible for the Powow to receive a permit
from the Town of Amesbury even if it was moved to a
different date.
It is deeply disappointing
to me that the organizers of the new race chose to use
the same location and date that had been used by the
Powow for the last several years. In it's
five years in existence, the Powow Triathlon (and former
Newburyport Triathlon) grew to become a significant
regional race with a field of over 500 entrants in 2009.
For all of it's successes, I am most proud of the
community support that the Powow received, along with the
contributions that the Powow was able to make back to the
community.
Due to the incredible support of
both the community and the many triathletes who raced in
the Powow, we were able to donate substantial amounts of
money to a number of worthy local charities, including
The Pettengill House, The Hugh Doyle Resource Center and
the Newburyport YWCA. I want to thank
everyone who has supported the Powow Triathlon, including
our many local business sponsors, all of the
participating athletes, and the Town of Amesbury. I
wish you all the best in your future endeavors.
Sincerely,
Andy Hawkes President Lighthouse
